Leap's core business model was revolutionary for its time, focusing on providing affordable, no-contract wireless service without requiring a credit check. This strategy specifically targeted lower-income segments, younger customers, and those who preferred pay-as-you-go simplicity, a market segment often underserved by traditional carriers. The company operated primarily through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Cricket Communications, Inc., also known as Cricket Wireless, which launched its service in 1999. Cricket offered flat-rate monthly plans, including unlimited local calling within a specified service area, eliminating the complex billing and long-term commitments of competitor plans. Over its history, Leap grew to serve approximately 4.6 million subscribers at its peak, making it one of the largest prepaid wireless carriers in the U.S. It initially built and operated its own CDMA network in regional markets across the country, expanding its coverage footprint strategically. As the market evolved, Leap also began to offer 4G LTE services. In 2010, the company entered into an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) agreement with Sprint Nextel to offer broader national coverage for its customers outside of its owned network areas. This hybrid approach allowed it to compete with larger national players. The company's existence as an independent entity concluded in 2014 when it was acquired by AT&T Inc. for approximately $1.2 billion in cash, plus the assumption of Leap's outstanding debt. The acquisition was approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Department of Justice (DOJ). The primary motivators for AT&T's purchase were acquiring Leap's valuable spectrum holdings (in the PCS and AWS bands), which covered a massive potential population, and utilizing the established Cricket brand and its strong retail distribution channels to expand AT&T's presence in the fast-growing, low-cost prepaid segment of the wireless market. After the acquisition, AT&T integrated Leap's operations and rebranded the prepaid service as the "new Cricket", leveraging AT&T's nationwide 4G LTE network to significantly improve the service and device selection for the acquired customer base, ensuring the legacy of the Leap's value-focused model continued under a new, larger corporate structure.
